Australia’s biggest short film festival is heading back to the Opalfields, with FLiCKERFEST 2026 set to light up Lightning Ridge for one unforgettable evening of cinema beneath the stars.

The Australian Opal Centre will host the FLiCKERFEST 2026 – 35th Anniversary Retrospective Shorts Tour at the Black Opal Heritage Shed on Saturday May 30 from 6:30pm to 9pm AEST.

Celebrating 35 years, Flickerfest is Australia’s largest Australian and international short film competition and the country’s only Academy Award and BAFTA-qualifying short film festival. Each year, the festival showcases the best short films from Australia and around the world at Bondi Beach before touring nationally with specially curated programmes.

This special anniversary retrospective will feature nine of the most loved Australian short films from Flickerfest’s 35-year history, bringing an impressive lineup of award-winning storytelling talent to Lightning Ridge.

The programme includes films featuring or created by some of Australia’s best-known actors, directors and writers including Oscar winner Adam Elliot, David Gulpilil, Aaron Pedersen, Rachel Perkins, Warwick Thornton, Damon Herriman, Joel Edgerton, Hugo Weaving, Jackie Weaver, Rachel Griffiths and Bluey creator Joseph Brumm.

Guests can expect around two and a half hours of screenings, including a 15-minute interval, with films screened outdoors in a relaxed outback atmosphere.

Doors open from 5:45pm, with organisers asking guests to arrive by 6:15pm and be seated by 6:25pm ahead of the screening.

Chairs and fire bins will be provided, with moviegoers encouraged to bring their own rugs, blankets, snacks and drinks for a cosy night under the stars.

The Black Opal Heritage Shed holds a special place in Flickerfest touring history, becoming the first venue in western NSW to host Flickerfest on Tour. The Australian Opal Centre says it is delighted to once again bring the festival back to Lightning Ridge as part of its ongoing cultural events programme.

The programme contains mature themes and is not recommended for children under 15. Children under 15 may attend if accompanied by an adult.

Group bookings can be made by calling 0403 492 462.

Donations supporting Australian Opal Centre cultural events are also welcome and help keep programmes affordable and accessible for the wider community.
