CONNECTING THE OUTBACK

The centre of our listening area sits at the meeting point of some of Australia’s most important inland transport routes.

The Kidman Way provides a major north–south connection through inland Australia, while the Kamilaroi Highway links communities and freight routes across northern New South Wales and into Queensland. The Mitchell Highway remains one of the western region’s most important transport corridors, connecting Bourke and the surrounding districts with Dubbo, Sydney and the northern capitals.

These highways carry local residents, tourists, freight operators, seasonal workers and commercial traffic through the region every day. For those travelling long distances across the Outback, reliable local news, weather, road information and emergency updates can be essential.

THE VOICE OF WESTERN NEW SOUTH WALES

Western New South Wales is one of Australia’s most diverse economic regions.

Agriculture remains central to the area, including broadacre farming, grazing, cotton, wheat, irrigated crops, citrus, stone fruit, olives and other specialist industries. Mining, mineral exploration, transport, local government, community services and tourism also play significant roles in the regional economy.

Tourism continues to grow as more Australians and international visitors discover the landscapes, history, culture and communities of the Outback. Improved roads, communications and visitor facilities have made the region more accessible, but the distances remain vast and dependable local information remains important.

LOCAL NEWS, INFORMATION AND GREAT MUSIC

Outback Radio 2WEB has been part of life in Western New South Wales for generations.

The station provides local and regional news, community information, weather updates, emergency broadcasts, entertainment and great music to listeners across the Outback. For people living and working in isolated areas, 2WEB has often provided an important connection with neighbouring communities and the wider world.

During emergencies, natural disasters and major regional events, the station plays a vital role in keeping listeners informed. During quieter times, it is a familiar companion at home, at work, on the land and on the road.
