People across Lightning Ridge and Walgett who help care for a loved one are being encouraged to attend two upcoming Carer Gateway community events aimed at connecting unpaid carers with support services, local networks and practical assistance.

The events will give local carers the chance to meet the Carer Gateway team, learn about the services available in their region and connect with others who understand the challenges that can come with caring responsibilities.

A community luncheon will be held in Lightning Ridge on Wednesday June 10 from 11:30am at the Lightning Ridge Bowls Club – Legends Room.

The following day, Thursday June 11, carers in Walgett are invited to attend a meet and greet afternoon tea from 2pm at the Walgett RSL Club.

The free events are open to people who care for a family member or friend living with disability, a medical condition, mental illness, health condition or someone who is frail due to age. Organisers say many people do not always recognise themselves as carers, despite providing regular support to loved ones.

Carer Gateway is an Australian Government initiative that provides free support services for unpaid carers across the country. Services are available in person, online and over the phone.

Support available through Carer Gateway includes counselling services, one-on-one coaching, respite care, peer support groups, online skills courses and tailored support packages designed to help carers continue in their caring role while also looking after their own wellbeing.

The organisation also provides emergency respite support, planned respite options, assistance with household tasks and transport, along with educational and training support where eligible.

Carer Gateway says caring responsibilities can often impact a person’s wellbeing, ability to work, study or socialise, and the service aims to provide practical and emotional support for carers navigating those challenges.

Attendees at the Lightning Ridge and Walgett events will be able to speak directly with the local Carer Gateway team about what support services may suit their individual circumstances and how to access ongoing assistance.

Both events are free, however registrations are essential by June 5 and places are limited. Guests are also asked to advise organisers of any dietary requirements when booking. The events are restricted to those aged 18 years and over.

For more information or to RSVP, call 1800 422 737 or visit the Carer Gateway website.
