The boil water alert for Lightning Ridge remains in place after further testing detected E. coli bacteria in the town’s water supply.
Walgett Shire Council has confirmed that E. coli was detected again in this week’s water testing results, meaning residents and visitors must continue following existing water safety precautions.
The alert was originally issued on 8 October after testing identified contamination in the town’s water supply.
Council says two consecutive weeks of clear water testing results are required before the alert can be lifted.
Council acknowledged the ongoing inconvenience to residents, thanking the community for its patience while water quality monitoring continues.
Water Safety Precautions Remain In Place
Residents and visitors are reminded that water used for drinking or food preparation must be brought to a rolling boil before use.
Electric kettles with automatic shut-off switches are suitable. Boiled water should be allowed to cool before being stored in a clean, covered container in the refrigerator.
Bottled or cooled boiled water should continue to be used for:
- Drinking and preparing food
- Washing fruit, vegetables and other uncooked foods
- Making ice
- Brushing teeth and gargling
- Providing drinking water for pets
Children should take bottled or cooled boiled water to school.
Dishes can continue to be washed in hot, soapy water or in a dishwasher.
Bathing And Washing
Tap water remains safe for bathing, although care should be taken to avoid swallowing water.
Parents and carers may wish to consider sponge baths for young children to reduce the risk of accidental ingestion.
Care should also be taken to prevent scalding when boiling and cooling water, particularly around young children.
Further Testing And Updates
Walgett Shire Council says water quality monitoring is continuing, with further updates to be provided as testing results become available.
The boil water alert will remain in place until Council officially advises that it has been lifted.
Residents and visitors are urged to continue following all existing water safety precautions in the meantime.
