Walgett Shire Council has issued a strong warning following a recent incident of illegal dumping at Amigos Castle in Lightning Ridge, with several individuals identified and facing potential fines.
Council waste operators have since cleaned up the site, while authorised officers have attended to investigate the incident. Several individuals have been identified and will be followed up directly, with Council indicating they can expect to receive penalty notices.
Council has condemned the dumping, pointing out that Amigos Castle is located less than three kilometres from both the Lightning Ridge Landfill and Council’s Blue Bins.
With domestic waste disposal available free of charge at Council landfills, there is no excuse for illegally dumping rubbish.
Zero Tolerance for Illegal Dumping
Council has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance approach, warning that all reported incidents will be investigated and offenders pursued.
Illegal dumping not only damages the environment and detracts from the appearance of local communities, but also places an unnecessary financial burden on ratepayers, who ultimately bear the cost of cleaning up illegally dumped waste.
Residents Urged to Report Illegal Dumping
Council is encouraging residents to help keep Walgett Shire clean by reporting any incidents of illegal dumping.
