Australians are once again being encouraged to take part in Dry July, the annual fundraiser that challenges participants to give up alcohol for the month of July while raising funds for people affected by cancer.
Since its humble beginnings in 2008, Dry July has grown into one of Australia’s most recognised fundraising campaigns, helping provide practical support and services for cancer patients, their families and carers.
Funds raised through Dry July help deliver a range of essential services, including transport to medical appointments, accommodation close to treatment centres, specialist cancer nurses, wellness programs and other support services that make a real difference during a difficult time.
The campaign began when three friends decided to take a break from alcohol for a month and raise money for their local hospital. Their original goal was to raise $3,000 for a television in a hospital waiting room. Instead, they raised an incredible $250,000, launching what would become a nationwide movement.
As well as supporting a worthy cause, participants often enjoy personal health benefits from taking a month off alcohol, including improved sleep, increased energy levels and better overall wellbeing.
Anyone can take part by signing up, asking family, friends and workmates to sponsor their efforts, and committing to an alcohol-free July. Every dollar raised helps support Australians affected by cancer.
