The St George Region is preparing to launch its winter visitor season in a big way — with hundreds of mystery hooks set to appear overnight across the Balonne Shire as part of a one-day Great Hook Drop.

On Monday June 1, locals and visitors alike are being encouraged to keep their eyes peeled as hooks begin appearing across all seven towns in the region — St George, Dirranbandi, Hebel, Thallon, Bollon, Nindigully and Mungindi.

Each hook will contain an invitation to get involved in the region’s latest tourism adventure, but hidden among them will be three special Golden Hooks — each worth a $500 fuel voucher for the lucky people who discover them first.

Balonne Shire Mayor Samantha O’Toole said the campaign was designed to spark curiosity and encourage travellers to explore the region in a different way.

“This is about creating a sense of discovery,” Mayor O’Toole said.

“You might set out to find one thing and end up uncovering so much more — that’s exactly what we want people to experience when they visit the St George Region.”

The Great Hook Drop officially launches the popular “I Got Hooked on St George Region” Scavenger Hunt — a self-guided adventure that takes participants across the region solving riddles and collecting fish tokens in each town.

Those tokens form part of a highly sought-after collectable key ring, with organisers hoping the experience encourages travellers to slow down, stay longer and experience more of what the region has to offer.

“This is just the beginning,” Mayor O’Toole said.

“Once the hooks are discovered, the real adventure starts.”

The scavenger hunt will run through until the end of October, with extra prizes also up for grabs along the way.

The first four participants each month to successfully complete the full “I Got Hooked on St George Region” challenge and collect all seven tokens will receive a $100 fuel voucher.

Visitors are being encouraged to follow the clues, explore the towns and see where the journey takes them.
