The Shearers Shindig is back for 2026, with nominations now open for shearers across the country to compete in the Quick Shear Competition on Saturday, May 23 at the Thargomindah Sports Grounds.

With up to $44,000 in prize money on offer, the event is set to attract some of the best shearers in Australia, along with strong local and regional competition.

The Quick Shear Competition features multiple categories, including learners, intermediate, masters and open divisions for both men and women, giving competitors of all experience levels a chance to get involved.

Adding to the incentive this year, any competitor who makes a final — in any category — will go into the draw to win a $500 fuel voucher, helping ease the cost of travel.

Nominations are limited to one category per shearer, with entrants receiving an official Shearers Shindig singlet as part of their nomination. Competitors are required to be on site by 12 noon on Saturday, May 23.

The competition forms the centrepiece of a full weekend of entertainment, with the Shearers Shindig running across Friday and Saturday, May 22 and 23.

The family-friendly event will feature markets, food vendors, a bar, live music and entertainment, along with crowd favourites including the Colour Fun Run and the Thargo Cup pig races hosted by Noah’s Pig Races.

There’ll also be live entertainment from Brownsnake Studios, plenty of opportunities to meet local characters, and a chance to experience the humour and culture of the shearing industry that helped build the region.

Visitors are encouraged to make a weekend of it, with a range of accommodation options available in Thargomindah, including the Oasis Motel, Explorers Caravan Park, and the Bulloo Riverside free campground. Swag camping will also be available at the event site, though overnight amenities will be limited.

Hosted by Bulloo Shire Council, the Shearers Shindig celebrates the region’s rich wool industry heritage while showcasing the skill, speed and precision of shearers from across the country.
